Pollen grains are encased in sporopollenin, one of the most chemically resistant biopolymers known — pollen grains survive in sediment for millions of years, which is precisely why palynologists can date archaeological layers with them.

That durability is a problem when you are trying to digest it. A meaningful share of whole bee pollen granules passes through the human digestive tract intact. This is rarely mentioned on packaging, and it is the single biggest gap between bee pollen's nutritional analysis and what you actually absorb.

Practical ways to improve it: chew the granules thoroughly rather than swallowing them whole, soak them in liquid for 15–30 minutes before consuming, blend them into a smoothie, or choose fermented bee bread, where the colony has already done some of the work.

The Benefits Worth Taking Seriously

1. Antioxidant Content

This is the best-supported claim. Bee pollen is genuinely rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids, and its antioxidant capacity has been measured consistently across many studies and floral sources. Darker pollens generally test higher.

A tablespoon of bee pollen is a legitimately dense source of micronutrients. As a supplement to an otherwise reasonable diet, that is a fair proposition — and a more honest framing than most of what is claimed for it.

  • Look for varied colour. Good multifloral bee pollen is a mix of yellows, oranges, browns, greys, and occasionally purples — each colour a different plant. Uniformly identical granules suggest a single source or heavy processing.
  • Buy refrigerated or frozen. Pollen's fatty acids and vitamins degrade at room temperature. Fresh-frozen preserves the most; properly dried is acceptable; warm shelf storage is the worst option.
  • Store it cold at home — freezer for long term, refrigerator for daily use.
  • Ask about trap management. Responsible beekeepers run pollen traps intermittently and never during a dearth. This is a question worth asking, and a good producer will have an answer.

A Sensible Starting Routine

After allergy testing as above, a typical intake is half a teaspoon to a tablespoon daily. Stirred into yoghurt, blended into a smoothie, or soaked briefly in a little water or juice. The flavour is mildly floral, slightly bitter, faintly chalky — pleasant rather than delicious.
